Dr. Pat Watkins, Vice President Emeritus and Professor Emeritus, retired from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2010, and served as Consultant to the President until 2016. While at UIW she served as the first Dean of College Preparatory Programs, including Principal of Incarnate Word High School, the first Dean of the Dreeben School of Education, and Vice President for International Affairs.
Dr. Watkins established the Brainpower Connection; with Dr. Lou Agnese co-founded and supervised China Incarnate Word in Guangzhou, China PRC; supervised Centro Universitario Incarnate Word in Mexico City; designed and implemented the International Education and Entrepeneurship Ph.D.; established San Antonio’s first K-12 exchange program with Kumomoto, Japan, the Institute of World Cultures, and collaborative educational ventures in China, Korea, Turkey, and Mexico. She was also a member of the University Strategic Planning Committee and the President’s Executive Council. Dr. Watkins taught at Trinity University prior to joining the faculty of (then) Incarnate Word College.
Before entering higher education, Dr. Watkins taught elementary, middle, and high school, as well as adult education and special education in Texas, Alabama, Washington, New York, Newfoundland, and the Republic of the Philippines. She served as classroom teacher, campus principal, and central office administrator; authored four nationally adopted science textbooks in the fields of life science, biology, and general science; lectured extensively throughout the U.S. in the field of science education and served as consultant to K-12 science teachers in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Watkins earned the B.A. degree from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas where she received the first St. John Baptiste de la Salle award for excellence in the field of education. She attended Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas where she completed a Master’s degree in the Management of Vocational/Technical Education, and earned the Ed.D. in Instructional Management (Curriculum and Instruction + Educational Administration) from Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. She is the author of the recent book, Lou – From Brooklyn to Broadway – The University of the Incarnate Word’s 25 years with Dr. Louis J. Agnese, Jr.
